    Description

    Brothers  George, James Elliott, sons of a Colt Armory artificer all enlisted for the War in 1861 and saw 3 years of action with the First Connecticut Heavy Artillery,  from the 1862 Richmond Campaign & Frederickburg  to Petersburg . An Original Civil War Letter form George at Fort Blenker, Va to Mother, May 22, 1863 ,  re long days work at the Fort (he was an artificer, building gun emplacements  and also learning to be  a draftsman (postwar he became a Colt Armory draftsman). He relates spending time with Dr Bunce and Secretary of the Navy Gideon Wells family at the fort . The final portion of the letter is written by Brother James reporting he is well  & will send her some of his bounty money as payday is coming. 3pp 8 x 5" ink. Comes w postal cover w stamps addressed to Mother "Hannah Elliott at North Glastonbury, CT" w Alexandria , Virginia cancellation.
    Fort Blenker was built it Fairlington I 1862 to protect the approaches along Four Mile Run  to the City of Arlington, Virginia, along what is now Route 7, near Fort Reynolds Park.  Fort Blenker was renamed Fort Reynolds in 1863 after General John Reynolds was killed at Gettysburg. Comes w service info for the Elliott Brothers of Manchester, Connecticut.
